Trauma & PTSD Treatment in Willmar, Minnesota
I provide trauma-informed psychiatric care for children (ages 4+), adolescents, young adults and adults in Willmar and throughout Minnesota.
Trauma doesn't always look the way people expect.
It's not always flashbacks and nightmares–sometimes it's feeling numb, disconnected, or like you're just going through the motions. Sometimes it's constant anxiety, difficulty trusting people, or having big reactions that are confusing to others.
If you or your child has been through something difficult, you don't have to carry this alone.
What Trauma and PTSD Actually Look Like
Trauma affects people in different ways. In children, it might show up as clinginess, nightmares, behavior changes at school, or being easily startled. In teens and young adults, it often looks like feeling numb or disconnected, persistent anxiety, difficulty trusting people, or avoiding anything that reminds them of what happened.
Sometimes trauma looks like depression, anxiety, or behavioral problems–which is why a thorough evaluation matters. What looks like "just anxiety" or "just being difficult" might actually be an unprocessed traumatic experience affecting how someone functions.
My Approach to Trauma Care
Trauma treatment requires safety, trust, and going at your own pace. Here's what that looks like in my practice:
You're in control. You don't have to share more than you're ready to share. Treatment moves at the pace that feels manageable for you or your child.
Your experience is valid, and your symptoms are real. Trauma survivors are often dismissed or not believed. At Serene Willow Psychiatry I want you to feel validated, and supported, encouraged and hopeful about your future.
Medication is a tool, not a fix. Medication can help with symptoms like anxiety, depression, or sleep problems that make it hard to function. But healing from trauma also requires processing with a trauma-specialized therapist. I can coordinate care with your therapist to ensure we're working together.
Treatment is individualized. What helps one person might not help another. We'll figure out what works for you or your child specifically.
Common Questions About Trauma Treatment
-
Not immediately, and not in detail if they're not ready. The first priority is helping your child feel safe in their body and environment. Processing the trauma comes later, when they're ready.
-
Medication can help manage symptoms like anxiety, depression, hypervigilance, mood swings, appearing checked out, struggling with friendships, or sleep problems that often come with trauma. It doesn't "cure" trauma, but it can make it more manageable while you or your child works on healing.
-
That's common with trauma. Our brains sometimes protect us by blocking out memories. You don't need to remember every detail to get help—we can work with what you do remember and the symptoms you're experiencing now and help to manage those.
-
That depends on the severity of the trauma, how long symptoms have been present, and what other factors are involved. Some people see improvement within a few months, while others need longer-term support. We'll check in regularly on progress and adjust the plan as needed.
