Psychiatric Evaluation & Medication Management in Willmar, Minnesota

Getting the right diagnosis and finding medication that actually works shouldn't feel like a guessing game. Whether you're seeking help for the first time or you've been struggling to find treatment that works, I provide thorough psychiatric evaluations and ongoing medication management for children, teens,  young adults and adults in Willmar and throughout Minnesota. I offer a holistic, integrative, evidence based approach to treatment. In your appointment with me we will discuss how evaluating medical lab work, completing a comprehensive background psychiatric assessment, & evaluation while providing diagnoses when relevant, and also offering skills/support services, referrals to therapy, and or in home or school support programs/services can be beneficial to your/or your family members life and mental health.

Starting treatment for mental health can feel overwhelming. You might not know what to expect, or you might have tried medications before that didn't work or caused difficult side effects.

My approach focuses on taking the time to really understand what's going on, creating a clear treatment plan together, and adjusting as we go so you get the care that actually helps. Your thoughts and concerns as well as your personal pain points and really getting to know you well are all very important to me. You are the Priority.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluations

Your initial evaluation is a thorough assessment where we'll explore your symptoms, your history, and what's been happening in your life. This isn't a rundown of a checklist of symptoms. It's a real conversation where I take the time to understand you, your pain points, and all about your life. Feel free to share as much or as little as you like.

This evaluation process gives you a clear diagnosis, an understanding of what's happening and why, and a treatment plan we've created together.

You'll also have the chance to ask questions and feel confident about the next steps.

Medication management is ongoing care to make sure your psychiatric medication is working well for you. Finding the right medication sometimes takes time and adjustments, and my job is to guide you through that process. Although now with Genesight DNA testing and results that process to stability is much faster.

Flexible Appointment Lengths

Follow-up medication management appointments initially are 40 or 60 minutes until you are stable so we have time to get to know each other better. Then shorter appointment times like 20 or 40 minutes will be suitable. Unless you have a time preference you prefer.

Psychiatric GeneSight DNA Genetic Testing

If you've tried multiple medications without success, or if you've experienced troubling side effects, I offer GeneSight DNA testing—a simple mouth swab test that shows how your body processes different psychiatric medications.

It is covered 100% for patients with Medicare, Medica or Medicare, and costs $330 for patients with commercial insurance. Since your DNA is the same throughout your life, these results can help guide medication management throughout your lifetime.

My Approach to Psychiatric Medication

I believe medication can be a powerful tool for managing mental health symptoms—but it's not the only tool, and it's not right for everyone. Here's how I approach medication management:

Medication is one part of treatment, not the whole thing. I combine medication with skill-building because lasting improvement usually requires both. I also often recommend individual therapy for clients as both therapy and medication management are vital to recovery and healing.

Your input matters/Your decisions and Plan. You know your own body and your own life. If a medication isn't working or is causing problems, I’m all ears, and we can adjust the plan as needed. I make recommendations based on my experience and expertise and we take your goals and make a plan together with your needs prioritized, but ultimately the decisions along the way are up to you.

I stay current with research. Mental health treatment evolves, and I make sure my approach reflects the most current/recent and updated psychiatric evidence-based research and practices.I attend annual psychiatric Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner conferences to stay up to date on the most recent research and follow the neuroscience news research results close to be best informed. I also listen daily to the most updated psychopharmacological podcasts.

Side effects should be taken seriously. At your appointment if you decide to try a medication I will educate your prior to starting it on what common side effects to watch for. At time some people get side effects and other times people do not get side effects. If medication is causing problems that affect your quality of life, we need to address that—whether that means adjusting the dose, trying a different medication, or exploring other options.

Insurance & Payment

I accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, Medica, and TriCare. I also offer sliding scale fees based on income for those who need them. My goal is to make quality psychiatric care accessible.

For questions about whether your insurance is accepted or what your out-of-pocket costs might be, call my billing department at (218) 999-7750 ext. 2.

Common Questions About Psychiatric Evaluation & Medication Management

  • No. An evaluation is about assessing you holistically and educating you to understand your mental health issues more in depth, and then discussing all your treatment options. I will make recommendations based on my experience and education and it is up to the client to choose what treatment they would like to proceed with. Medication is one option, but therapy, lifestyle changes, adding coping skills, and other approaches might also be part of the plan. The goal is to find changes that work for you.

  • That depends on your diagnosis, your symptoms, and how you respond to treatment. Some people benefit from medication for a few months while they build coping skills. Others need longer-term treatment. We'll talk about this throughout your care and adjust as needed.

  • That's not uncommon. Finding the right medication sometimes takes some trial and adjustment. If the first medication doesn't work well or causes side effects, we'll try something different. Tools like psychiatric GeneSight genetic testing can also help us make more informed choices.

  • Good psychiatric medication will not fundamentally change your personality. It should help you feel more like yourself by reducing symptoms that are getting in the way. If medication is making you feel unlike yourself, that's something definitely something you would want to tell me and we can address it.

  • Initially, appointments are typically every 2-3 weeks while we're establishing care and adjusting medication. Once things are stable, many patients move to appointments every 2-3 months.

  • I'll work with you to find affordable options whenever possible. There are Good RX coupons,  generic versions of medications, patient assistance programs, and other resources. Don't let cost prevent you from getting help. Let's talk about what's possible.
